What is Hypnosis?
Live your life, take control
What is Hypnosis?
Will I be asleep?
The word hypnosis derives from the Greek word for sleep, so there is a misconception that you will be asleep and snoring!
Hypnosis is a natural state when you totally relax, physically, mentally and emotionally. People are in and out of hypnosis all day.
The most obvious times are in the moments just before you are fully awake and just before you drop off to sleep. Other examples include
- being totally engrossed in a film or book – You have that sense of anticipation, fear, sadness – depending on what the story line is.
- Driving a car on a road you know well – You often zone out and cannot consciously remember a part of the journey
Will I be under the control of someone else?
If you have watched stage shows or some Hollywood films it gives the impression that the Hypnotist is controlling someone. I’m often asked – Will I bark like a dog or cluck like a chicken – Not unless you really want to!
You are totally in control the whole time you are in hypnosis and very aware of what is going on around you. You choose whether you want to be hypnotised and what you want to say or do whilst in hypnosis.
How Hypnosis can help you?
Your mind operates the brain and is a bit like a CPU operating a computer. It’s made up of 2 parts
You use your conscious mind when making decisions or when you first learn a new skill. When you’re learning to ride a bike, you concentrate very hard on balancing and pedalling.
Your subconscious mind is there to look after you. How? It operates and maintains your body, as well as recording and storing all your memories, skills and habits. So once you learn to ride a bike, it becomes automatic and does not require any thought.
The subconscious mind creates resistance to change, and when it conflicts with the conscious mind it will always win. The subconscious believes it’s always right.
For example, you want to only eat when you are hungry (conscious decision), but you get a little stressed and the subconscious thinks “I know what will make you happy – food”. The next thing is your will power has gone out the window and you’re eating even though you are not hungry!
By guiding a client into hypnosis, the client becomes relaxes. This enables the therapist to by-pass the conscious mind and talk to the subconscious mind where the client forms the skills and habits. This enables reprogramming of the subconscious, so as to form the habits that you want.
Hypnotherapy will help to change the reaction of the subconscious, as long as it really believes you want this wholeheartedly and it will be for your benefit.
